Tree Surgery
Trees can add both character and privacy to a garden, often becoming one of its most valued features. However, keeping them in good condition takes the right approach, which is why homeowners, businesses and letting agents across Essex have trusted Gary Rogers Tree Surgery for over 35 years.
From routine pruning through to large-scale removals, every job starts with a site visit and straightforward advice. Gary will assess the tree, discuss any concerns that you may have and recommend the most appropriate course of action.

Tree Surgery Services
We carry out all aspects of tree surgery, including pruning, trimming, branch removal, crown lifting, crown thinning, crown reductions, pollarding, tree dismantling and tree felling. The most suitable option will depend on the species of tree, its condition and the outcome that you’re hoping to achieve; which is why we prefer to see things in-person before making any recommendations. In some cases, a small amount of pruning can make a significant difference. In others, more extensive work may be needed to manage future growth or address safety concerns.
Tree Pruning and Crown Work
Trees can naturally become unbalanced over time; develop crossing branches or simply outgrowing the space available to them. Professional pruning helps to manage these issues whilst encouraging healthy growth. Depending on the tree and its location, this may involve crown thinning to reduce the density, crown lifting to create additional clearance beneath the tree, or crown reduction to reduce the overall size whilst retaining its natural shape.
We are often asked about ‘lopping’ or ‘topping’ trees. Although these are commonly-used phrases, they aren’t actually tree surgery terms and can mean different things to different people; which is why it’s always better for us to see the tree in-person.

Tree Removal
Whilst we always look at trimming and other maintenance options first, there are times when removing a tree is the best course of action. This may be because the tree is in poor condition, has become too large for its surroundings or is causing ongoing problems within the garden; every situation is different.
Some trees can be safely felled in one piece, whilst others need to be dismantled carefully in sections, particularly where access is limited or there are buildings or fences nearby. Following tree removal, some customers choose to leave the stump in place, whilst others prefer it to be removed completely. We can advise on the options available and arrange stump grinding where required.
Gary still carries out much of the climbing work himself and remains actively involved in every project. Whether he's in the tree or supervising from the ground, you can be confident that tree removals will be completed safely and with respect for the surrounding garden.
Tree Preservation Orders and Conservation Areas
If a tree is protected by a Tree Preservation Order or sits within a conservation area, there’s likely to be extra steps to take before work can begin. If you're unsure, don't worry, we can explain what's required and even complete the necessary applications on your behalf.

Commercial Tree Surgery
In addition to domestic tree surgery, we also provide professional tree care services for landlords, letting agents, schools, housing associations and commercial premises throughout Essex. Whether you require a one-off tree removal or routine maintenance, our experienced team can deliver a safe and reliable service that meets your needs. Please contact us to discuss your project and arrange a free, no-obligation quotation.
Pollarding
Pollarding is a specific method of pruning that can help to keep certain species at a more manageable size. When carried out correctly and maintained over time, pollarding can provide an effective long-term solution for trees that would otherwise become too large for their surroundings.
Free Quotations and Honest Advice
When visiting your property, Gary will assess the tree, provide advice on its condition and explain details of any work that he believes may be beneficial. If no work is required, he will tell you that too. You'll also receive a realistic idea of how long the work is likely to take, so you know exactly what to expect.
With more than 35 years of experience and NPTC and City & Guilds qualifications, Gary is able to provide informed guidance and carry out all work safely and professionally. Why Customers Choose Gary Rogers Tree Surgery?
For many of our customers, it comes down to knowing who they're dealing with. Gary has been working as a tree surgeon for more than 35 years and still takes genuine pride in the standard of work provided. We're a local business, we care about the area and we value the trust that our customers place in us. Whether you need advice on a single tree or help managing a larger garden, you'll receive the same friendly service and attention to detail.
Can I cut back branches from my neighbour's tree?
In many situations, you can cut back branches that overhang your property up to the boundary line, although restrictions may apply if the tree is protected by a Tree Preservation Order or located within a conservation area. Gary can advise on the best approach and help to avoid unnecessary disputes between neighbours.
Where does the waste go?
All green waste will be removed from the site as part of our service unless otherwise agreed. We are licensed green waste carriers and always make sure that waste is disposed of responsibly through authorised recycling facilities. Much of the material is also recycled for biomass, with customers sometimes using the logs or chippings for allotments.
How do I know if a tree is protected by a Tree Preservation Order?
The easiest way is to check with your local authority. If you’re unsure, Gary can advise on whether a Tree Preservation Order may apply and explain what permissions might be needed before any work is carried out.
Can a tree be reduced to prevent removing it?
Often, yes. Many trees can be managed through pruning, crown reduction or ongoing maintenance rather than complete removal. The most suitable option depends on the species, condition and location of the tree.
Will pruning damage my tree?
When carried out correctly, pruning can improve the health and appearance of a tree. Poorly executed work can cause problems, which is why professional advice is important.
What should I do if a tree has been damaged in a storm?
If a tree has suffered storm damage, it’s best to have it assessed as soon as possible. Broken or weakened branches can become a safety risk and may require urgent attention.
Do trees need regular maintenance?
Some do and some don’t, much depends on the species, age and location of the tree. During a quotation, Gary can advise whether ongoing maintenance would be beneficial and how often it should be carried out.
